survey says people think there are too many reality TV dating shows.
Oversaturation and copycat shows might be hurting networks. One thousand adults surveyed by Ipsos-Insight basically think there are too many reality TV shows in most categories. This chart breaks down the results; nearly every subgenre of reality TV is oversaturated, according to the poll. The worst offender: “Reality dating programs,” which 79 percent of those surveyed think there are too many of those types of shows. One exception: talent competitions like American Idol (nearly tied with 43 percent saying there are too many, and 44 percent saying there are just enough). The big winner is redecorating programs like Trading Spaces (29 percent think there are too many; 56 percent think there are the right amount). Additionally, 44 percent of those surveyed also think there are too many shows “with gay characters or gay themes.” They weren’t asked if there are too many shows with straight characters or themes. Sit-coms and dramas also had favorable numbers.
