critics: ABC’s “idiotic,” “inept,” “cheap” shows help “exhaust the genre.”
ABC’s string of five crappy reality TV shows—including Are You Hot and I’m a Celebrity—Get Me Out of Here has helped to at least slow the genre’s momentum, USA TODAY’s Robert Bianco and the LA Times’ Brian Lowry both say. “Though failure is not uncommon on TV, seldom has a slate of shows been more inept or less desired,” which “has proved that the thirst for reality is, indeed, quenchable,” Bianco argues. In the context of a piece reporting that even more scripted shows than usual are being planned for the fall, Lowry argues says that ABC “appears to be doing its best to exhaust the genre with programs that appear cynical and derivative even by Hollywood’s standards.”
