The draw of “an ‘obscene spectacle of nullity, insignificance, and platitude,’” as identified by Jean Baudrillard has Joy Press confessing in The Village Voice that she’s “a reality TV slut.” For her, the shows—from Joe Millionaire, which “is designed to mindfuck its female contestants,” to The Surreal Life “stripping [the celebrities] of whatever dignity they still have”—the shows are “all about escaping the real real world.”
