CBS backs off real Beverly Hillbillies; ABC, FOX defend their shows.
The ad campaign has apparently had an effect, as “CBS is dampening expectations for” The Real Beverly Hillbillies. CBS president Les Moonves says it’s “very, very much in the discussion stages” and “sometimes … it may appear you’re pushing it too far. … It wasn’t our intent to offend everybody. I’m sorry if we have,” according to the AP. Meanwhile, “ABC [is] using reality to get back on track” with “at least 10 new reality and comedy series before the season ends in May and at least six series over the summer,” Electronic Media reports. They’re trying to reverse “a seven-year ratings decline.” Finally, in a New York Times profile, FOX’s reality TV show chief Mike Darnell says a possible war “won’t affect people’s appetite for these shows.” He prefaces that, saying “it is harder to be silly—and a lot of these shows are silly—during a time of war.”
