FOX Chicago will lock gay people, homophobes in a house together.
FOX’s Chicago affiliate has announced “a revolutionary reality TV project” called The Experiment: Gay and Straight. Five gay people and five straight people (all of whom have problems with homosexuality) will live together for a week “to confront some of the misunderstandings, fears and concerns that straight and gay people have,” the network says. FOX Chicago is allowing the public to select the 10 cast members from a list of 28 candidates. The straight candidates includes a woman who thinks “all gay men have small yapping dogs,” a woman who says she’d “[take] several showers a day and [use] tons of antibacterial wipes and lotions” because of the diseases she thinks are spread by gay people; a man who thinks being gay is “a mental illness”; and a man who says “homosexuality should be sheltered from all children.” The gay candidates include a hate-crime victim; a man who says “[i]t almost seems like it’s more acceptable in some gay circles to be HIV-positive than it is to be fat”; a lesbian raising a daughter with her partner; and a woman whose “mom took [her] to a psychiatrist to try to ‘change’ me.
