Project Runway 3

Letter from Runway producers bans “patterns” and “portfolios” but not books

Entertainment Weekly has obtained a letter sent by producers to Project Runway 3 contestants before the show began. One section explains “What you CANNOT bring,” but it does not explicitly mention books.

During the episode when Keith was kicked off, Tim Gunn said, “We have very clear and concise rules for designers on Project Runway. One of the absolute no-nos is no fashion how-to books.” But the letter does not specify how-to books. Instead, it says, “Tools and supplies DOES NOT include the following: patterns, portfolios, personal computers or specialty equipment/tools (ie, a pleating tool).”

However, as several EW commenters note, this is a letter, not the actual contract. And during the reunion, Keith denied this was in the contract, and the cast said it was in the contract. Besides, Keith’s story has varied, with the book-planting accusation only surfacing at the reunion, not during interviews he gave when he was kicked off the show.
