Fashion is now Parson’s largest major because of Project Runway

The lingering camera shots of the Parsons School of Design on Project Runway, never mind the presence of reality TV icon Tim Gunn, has had a positive effect on the school where the show is filmed.

Since the show began in late 2004, “[a]pplications to the fashion program have increased by more than 20 percent … and the number of freshmen who declare fashion as their major at the end of their first year has more than doubled since 2001 (to 187 last year),” The New York Times reports. And thus “fashion is now the largest major at Parsons.”

The university’s president, Bob Kerrey, says, “A show like ‘Project Runway’ brands Parsons all the time, and that has had an impact on the number of people who want to become fashion designers. It’s been largely good for the school.”
