Gareth Gates placed second during the UK’s first Pop Idol, and began his career as a success despite that finish, much like the US’ successful second-place singer, American Idol 2’s Clay Aiken. He released two albums: What My Heart Wants to Say and Go Your Own Way. Now, although Gareth “had the pop world at his feet … it all seems to have gone wrong,” according to The Mirror. Agent Johnathan Shalit sums it up this way: “Gareth hasn’t evolved as an act, whereas Will Young has shown he has a real talent and he has other sides to him. He is one-dimensional and once the kids get tired of that they move on. I don’t even think it is because he has partied too hard—you can party and be a success.” His label is rumored to be dropping him, he pissed off his church after lying about having sex with a model, and his speech impediment has returned. He turned 20 a week ago today, and “[f]riends say he is determined to use this milestone to kickstart his flagging career.”
