Oprah’s OWN will give a talk show to the winner of a Mark Burnett-produced competition
Oprah and Mark Burnett are producing a reality competition series that will search for a talk show host for Oprah’s new network, OWN. The series wants those with “a big personality and a big dream for yourself,” and the show can focus on cooking, interior design and fashion, or health and well being—or it can be a “traditional talk show” or “wildcard.”
Like HGTV’s Design Star and The Next Food Network Star, the show will feature a group of finalists competing for a show. The 10 finalists will include one person from the group of the top five most-popular videos on the show’s web site, where you can upload an audition video. So yes, Oprah is following in the footsteps of I Love New York’s second season.
Already, there are 2,525 videos online, but casting producers are also casting via open calls. They only guarantee one spot in the top 10 will come from those viewers pick as the top five online videos.
Mark Burnett told the AP that the best people will share attributes identified by the star of The Apprentice. “Donald Trump gave me the greatest advice with ‘The Apprentice’: Find people with the greatest energy source … you’ll be hard-pressed to show me someone who has their own show on TV who is not energetic and who has charisma,” Burnett said. He also compared the new show to a much more popular TV series: “Much in the way ‘American Idol’ finds unknown people (to be recording stars) there’s no reason we can’t find someone who deserves their own show.”
