A&E’s Intervention back for a third season

On Friday, A&E debuted the third season of its reality series Intervention. New episodes air Fridays at 10 and repeat during the week.

The first episode of the new season, which repeats this week, follows Ryan, who “injects OxyContin up to 15 times a day” and has “moods [that] swing wildly from needy to hostile,” A&E says.

With HBO’s multi-part Addiction series debuting the night before, most critics compared the two shows’ approaches. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Melanie McFarland says that “the line between compelling depictions and exploitation can get blurred” in A&E’s show, while The Philadelphia Daily News’ Ellen Gray wrote that it’s guilty of “snap judgment[s].”

However, The New Republic’s Sacha Zimmerman says that “there is something undeniably human about the show,” and says that while it is “hardly nuanced” and “you would be hard-pressed to believe the network was capable of delivering a potent, riveting show,” the show features “subjects [who] are raw and their addiction palpable. It’s not hard to imagine that the show just might do somebody out there some good.”
