ArchivesUPN kicks off its own search-for-a-singer show tonight at 8 p.m. ET with the awkwardly titled R U the Girl with T-Boz & Chilli. T-Boz and Chilli will look for a third woman to perform with them and record a single. However, they’re quick to note that they do not want to replace Left Eye. Instead, they just want to make old white male TV critics have to write “R U” non-ironically.
The Hollywood Reporter says the show “doesn’t break any ground as a format, but it does have an unexpected charm lacking in many of its kindred series.” The New York Daily News says that’s because everything “is clearly designed to accentuate the positive. In contrast to most elimination shows, which become giddy when someone looks awful on camera, the critiques here are all framed to be constructive.”
