UPN will break white dating show trend, sort of, with next week’s The Player.
On Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, UPN will debut its first dating series, The Player. The network says the show “follows a stunning Miami model named Dawn and her two girlfriends for eight weeks as they pit 13 self-described ‘players’ against each other in a quest to be the last one standing.” That sounds very much like The Bachelor and every other dating show, but there’s a difference: a majority of the men are not white. As The Philadelphia Enquirer reports, “the UPN show is groundbreaking in its ethnic array of eligible lovers, [but] it is following what has become a whites-only tradition in the casting of its star.” One casting director says the trend of having mostly white casts for dating series is because networks “don’t want to alienate their audience,” which is “overwhelmingly white,” the paper says.
