FOX’s Next Great Champ could be shut down by athletic officials for violations.

FOX’s boxing series could fall from a punch that’s coming from the California State Athletic Commission. The commission “is examining potential rule violations by the producers of the Fox show” because “a licensed promoter may not have been involved in the production of some of the boxing matches,” The New York Times reports. According to the Times, “The chairman of the commission, Sanford L. Michelman, said he considered shutting down the Fox show.” He said “at least two of the bouts were” conducted, as the paper reports, “without a licensed promoter” which “would violate both federal and California law.” Part of this involves Endemol USA, who apparently cut checks to participants despite not being a promoter. A lawyer for Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy production company said, “We do believe the commission will come to the conclusion that the bouts were conducted properly.”
