Betty White, age 90, celebrated tonight as her hidden camera show gets a preview
Tonight, NBC airs a special focusing on Golden Girls star Betty White, and follows it with a preview of a new reality series that carries her name.
Betty White’s 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America’s Golden Girl debuts at 8, and features celebrities—including Mary Tyler Moore, Ed Asner, Valerie Harper, Ellen DeGeneres, Morgan Freeman, Tina Fey, Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, and Hugh Jackman—who will “deliver birthday wishes.” So, it’s basically a roast without the vitriol, and yet another moment in our culture’s now-ongoing celebration of Betty White, who deserves it (if only for the hours of entertainment she gave us as Rose Nylund.)
That special will be followed at 9:30 by the first episode of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, a hidden camera series that mostly just uses her name. (Asked about it by critics last week, she said she hadn’t seen clips of the pranks.) While I normally loathe hidden camera shows, this seems like a fun, actually funny version of one, because the gag is about senior citizens doing or saying funny things and getting reactions from people who don’t expect what they’re seeing.
