Nashville Star 5 moves to NBC this summer; will feature groups, duets, teenagers

Nashville Star is leaving its cable home of five seasons, moving to NBC and shifting to the summer. The country music-focused singing competition has aired on USA Network, which is owned by NBC Universal, since its debut in 2003.

The show’s host and judges will change yet again, and it “will open the auditions not just to solo artists but also to duets and singing groups who are primed to compete. Another first for season six, in attempt to find the best of the best, the competition will be open to singers 16-years of age and older,” according to an NBC press release. Casting will begin in February.

The show is produced by Reveille and executive produced by Ben Silverman, who happens to be NBC’s new co-chair. Variety reports that “USA execs made it clear earlier this year that they had no interest in bringing ‘Star’ back for a sixth season.”
