MTV’s Rich Girls debuts tonight.
Replacing Jessica Simpson’s airheaded antics at 10:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday nights is Rich Girls, an eight-episode series that follows Ally Hilfiger and Jaime Gleicher. Ally, who is Tommy’s daughter, has been friends with Jaime for 3.5 years, she says. In a story about shows that focus on wealth, including the upcoming The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and her now-in-rehab friend Nicole Richie, The New York Times notes that the two “are producers of the show and offered themselves as subjects to MTV.” The Times’ Alessandra Stanley says the show is “a lowbrow version” of Bret Easton Ellis’ Less Than Zero that “narrows in mercilessly on Jaime, who is not as slim, pretty or popular as Ally, and whose efforts to appear sophisticated and cool keep collapsing on camera, thanks to cruel editing.” Tim Goodman agrees with the Times’ analysis, writing that the show is “shallow, shameless and annoying in the guise of Hilfiger and Gleicher trying to prove how normal they are.”
