Bear Grylls fired by Discovery Channel over contractual dispute
Man vs. Wild star Bear Grylls has been fired by the Discovery Channel.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that “the network has allegedly been unable to get Grylls to participate in two unannounced projects he was contracted for.” A spokesperson told the paper, “Due to a continuing contractual dispute with Bear Grylls, Discovery has terminated all current productions with him.”
The paper mentions Deadliest Catch captains’ contractual dispute, which led to them quitting and being sued by the network before everyone made up; it’s not clear if this is a similar situation, one that could eventually be resolved.
Four years ago, when Man vs. Wild returned for a second season, the network preceded it with disclaimers after embarrassing revelations that the show wasn’t reflecting reality. But it continued for seven seasons, most recently airing last July and August.
