Jake Gyllenhaal had no safety line pulling himself across a rope on Man vs. Wild

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal joined Bear Grylls in Iceland on Man vs. Wild last night, and besides gutting a rotten sheep with his bare hands, peeing on national TV, and falling into a hole, he slid across a rope that was high above an icy valley. And he did so without a safety line.

Although the elements are very real, the show is still set up: Discovery added disclaimers after it was revealed that a lot of the show was faked, so episodes now admit that “situations are presented to Bear so he can demonstrate survival techniques.” But the scene below is a good example of how there is some genuine danger during some moments—and that’s true even for an A-list actor.

Bear told the Los Angeles Times that when Jake pulled himself across on the rope, the line that was tied to him “wouldn’t have held him” if he fell. “That wasn’t a safety line — that was a helping line for him to balance. And if he ran out of puff, I could have helped him across with that. But I was pretty confident that he’d be OK. We worked out afterwards that it was the equivalent of doing 180 pull-ups,” he said.
