Laguna Beach

Educational DUI film will be modeled after Laguna Beach’s cast and format

A new anti-DUI “public service announcement with the look and feel of a reality television show/documentary” is being filmed, and the producers found inspiration in the cast and production of MTV’s Laguna Beach, the Contra Costa Times reports.

“Filmmakers hope to trick young viewers into thinking the teenage characters being portrayed by actors are real,” they told the paper. Director Rebecca Brown said, “We want the kids to sort of lose themselves in the characters and their high school antics, like they would an episode of ‘Laguna Beach, The Real O.C.’”

The movie “is being produced by graduate students at the USC” and “is expected to cost about $100,000 altogether to complete,” the paper reports. It will be “about three high school students who get into a car accident after drinking.” To make them even more real, “producers are working with MySpace.com to create fake Web sites for each of the film’s characters.”

Brown is working with the Troy and Alana Pack Foundation, which exists to “help educate the public about traffic safety and responsibility” and working for “the creation and passing of stricter DUI and DMV laws and enforcement” in California, according to its web site.
