MTV will reinvent reality TV with convention-less dramatic reality series Laguna Beach.
The network that ushered in the modern era of reality television is planning to reinvent the genre. MTV is planning Laguna Beach, an unscripted reality series that will exclude basically every reality TV show element that was born on The Real World. That means no ” confessionals and interviews,” Variety reports, although “the weekly primetime series will focus on seven teens, five girls and two boys, who have opened their lives to MTV’s cameras. Events such as prom night, spring break and college visits will serve as signposts for the real-life drama.” An executive producer on the show says it’ll be filmed “like our viewers’ favorite dramatic series.” The series, which debuts Sept. 14, is subtitled “The Real Orange County,” likely to differentiate it from that O.C. where Seth Cohen lives.
