opera singers compete in France.
The French are taking the highbrow road in their approach to talent competition reality TV shows. Orpheus: Behind the Scenes in the Underworld will feature a “cast of 25-to-30-year-old singers”; they “have graduated from conservatories all over Europe” and will try “to impress conductor Christophe Coin, Italian opera director Antonio Latella and 16 teachers to win the best roles in Monteverdi’s 17th-century opera ‘Orpheus’ [L’Orfeo],” Variety reports. The show will air on music network Mezzo in six-minute segments during weekdays and 26-minute shows on the weekends; a live performance will air April 17.
