Theo Tams wins Canadian Idol 6, is openly gay
Alberta 22-year-old Theo Tams beat Nova Scotia 22-year-old Mitch MacDonald to win Canadian Idol 6 last night.
Tams was called “probably the best male vocalist we’ve ever had on this show” by judge Zack Werner on Monday’s episode, according to Canwest. It reports that he “proved to have the most talent, perseverance and — eventually — fan following. A standout from the outset, he was pegged as a frontrunner by the judges and became more prominent as the season went on.”
He is a “classical music student [who] carved a niche for himself with power ballads and soaring vocals — usually from behind the piano,” Canwest reports, while runner-up Mitch “MacDonald gained stature as the show progressed with his folk-rock song picks” and “even managed comparisons with recording legend Paul Simon from a number of judges who eventually came around to his distinctive voice.”
Tams is openly gay and “came out on the show,” according to After Elton, which reports that he “spoke about having had a relationship with a man during one of the post-song interviews on the show back in June.” That came after his performance of OneRepublic’s “Apologize.”
