Canadian Idol won’t air in 2009
Canadian Idol won’t be broadcast in 2009, its network announced. The show’s sixth season concluded in September with openly gay singer Theo Tams’ win.
In a statement, CTV said that the show isn’t being cancelled but “[a]s a result of the current economic climate, production of Canadian Idol will rest for the 2009 broadcast year.” It also said that other international versions, such as those in Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia, have taken similar breaks.
The series “remains a ratings monster, scoring an average of 1.47 million viewers in September,” the Globe and Mail reported, but “advertising revenues are expected to drop sharply” next year and “the move would preserve cash as the networks brace for a recession.”
