Melissa O’Neil wins third Canadian Idol
Canada has its first female Canadian Idol, and she is 17-year-old Melissa O’Neil. She beat Rex Goudie after receiving the majority of the 3.6 million votes cast.
Melissa “occasionally found herself in danger of being voted off, at one point forgetting the words to a song. She always recovered, however, receiving praise from the judges for exuding a maturity beyond her years,” the Globe and Mail reports. One of the judges said she has “the most phenomenal, natural instincts for being a performer.”
The Toronto Sun’s Bill Brioux says that with Melissa’s win, the show “came of age last night,” as it previously was “too much about feeding the fame machine and CTV selling shampoo than about kids and talent and discovery.”
