contestants faint, audience fights on Superstar, the Middle East’s Idol.
After “the Lebanese frontrunner was eliminated in the semifinals last week” from Superstar, the Arab world’s licensed version of the Idol shows, “angry fans in the audience pelted each other with chairs or anything else they could find, and the two remaining contestants fainted. Scores of people took to the streets in Lebanon to protest,” the AP reports. A Jordanian, Diana Karzon (who earlier was almost attacked when she moved on in the competition) won Monday after 4.8 million people from voted. The finalists were from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates. Most nations backed their contestant, which made the show “the most successful for an Arab television,” a network executive says.
