ArchivesGermany attempted its own version of The Truman Show with an indefinitely-running Big Brother, but the show’s low ratings have led producers to end it in February.
Big Brother: The Village, produced by Endemol, “began in March on a purpose-built set outside Cologne that covered 5,000 square metres,” the BBC reports. Still, it “will end on 26 February 2006 due to falling ratings.” An RTL II spokesperson said, “The series has not attracted as many viewers as we would have liked.”
Instead of just getting drunk and participating in ridiculous challenges, “participants were expected to work, with the nature of their employment dependent on which social status they were assigned on entering the village,” the BBC reports.
