Reality show producer Ben Silverman becomes NBC’s entertainment co-chair

Ben Silverman is the new co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and NBC Universal Television Studio, NBC announced today. While he’s also responsible for the NBC version of The Office, Ugly Betty, and many scripted shows, and is sharing responsibilities with someone else, a reality show producer is now in basically now charge at NBC.

Silverman, who’s 36, is an executive producer for—and his production company Reville has produced—a number of reality shows, most of which are strong series: NBC’s weight-loss competition Biggest Loser, Morgan Spurlock’s FX show 30 Days, USA’s country music competition Nashville Star, Bravo’s docudrama Blow Out, the gotcha series The $25 Million Dollar Hoax, and NBC’s docudrama The Restaurant.

Although there were “indications that NBC U would buy Reveille, it’s now expected the company will remain independent, with Silverman no longer involved in running it,” Variety reports.

NBC Universal’s CEO Jeff Zucker said in a statement, “After years of working with him as an agent, a supplier to both our broadcast and cable networks, and as a producer, we’ve come to know him as one of the most savvy and successful executives in the industry. I always thought this was the right job for Ben. This new role will give him the opportunity to redefine our programming, our relationship with advertisers, and our ongoing commitment to the new digital frontier.”
