MyNetworkTV drops scripted programs in favor of reality TV

MyNetworkTV, the network owned by News Corp. that was formed after the merger of UPN and The WB into The CW, has dropped its strategy of airing scripted telenovas, and will instead program its schedule entirely with reality shows.

MyNetworkTV “has dropped plans to produce seventh and eighth cycles of telenovelas, and has decided to cease pursuing scripted content of any kind,” TV Week reports. The network “is in discussions with top reality producers to acquire new shows.”

Greg Meidel, the network’s president, said, “We’re not developing anything scripted at this time. We don’t have one scripted project, other than telenovelas that have already been produced.”

Their scripted programs’ have low ratings, he said, because they cannot compete with other networks (although their dumb name might have something to do with the network’s lack of name recognition and popularity, too). “The five major networks spend enormous amounts on development and I don’t think we can outdo what they do in [comedies] ‘Family Guy’ or ‘Two and a Half Men,’ or [dramas] ‘House’ or ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ But I think there’s some great reality projects out there that are available,” he said.
