ArchivesThe Directors Guild of America has, for the first time, nominated reality TV shows as part of their annual awards. Among comedies, dramas, musical variety, daytime serials, and kids’ shows, reality TV shows now have their own category.
In a statement, DGA President Michael Apted said the “Awards represent an opportunity for the Guild to recognize this vital role and to honor the broad range of excellence found in television directing today. As we celebrate the inauguration of the DGA Reality Television Award this year, I offer my congratulations to the first five nominees — their work is a strong testament to the importance of the director’s role in this genre.”
For some reason, Penn & Teller’s Showtime series Bullshit is nominated, even though, in terms of its format and style, it’s absolutely nothing like the others. And Mark Burnett series such as Survivor and The Contender were ignored.
Here are the nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television in reality programs:

- Star Price, “Penn & Teller: Bullshit!” - “Circumcision”

- Bertram Van Munster, The Amazing Race - “Episode #805”
