ABC will air High School Musical reality series
The Disney Channel’s crazy-popular fictional franchise High School Musical will soon become a reality series on ABC.
The series will be a talent search competition that includes “a nationwide talent hunt followed by a group of contestants studying at a music conservatory to hone their skills,” Variety reports. Contestants will be eliminated each week until a final winning performer is chosen” and receives a yet-to-be-announced prize. In other words, it’s pretty much American Idol and every Idol clone, except with teenagers and the High School Musical brand name.
Variety says “appearances by the franchise’s stars [are] likely,” and that makes sense, since they are a large part of why “consumer products related to the franchise will reach $650 million in sales this year.”
The show will air this summer, and The Disney Channel may also air a version of the series, according to Variety.
