ABC planning obstacle course competition Wipeout; hunters will chase contestants on SciFi’s Run for Money

ABC and SciFi are developing two new competition-based reality series that are extremely similar to shows that aired a few years ago on other networks.

Endemol is producing a pilot of Wipeout for ABC, a show that “features 50 contestants navigating through ‘the world’s largest obstacle course’ for a $50,000 cash price,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers compare it to their now-cancelled NBC competition Fear Factor: it’s “‘Fear Factor’ with none of the gross.” Since this is just a pilot, no debut date has been announced yet.

Meanwhile, SciFi is developing Run For Money, a competition “that pits a group of contestants against each other in the quest for cash prizes, while being stalked by relentless ‘hunters,’” the network said in a press release. The show unfolds “over 60 minutes of real time in various landmark locations. As the clock winds down, the competition gets harder as more hunters appear on the streets, the game perimeter gets smaller, and tasks are assigned that test fraying nerves. Contestants earn money for every second they ‘stay alive’ and may opt out at their choosing. If they keep playing and are overrun by a hunter, they lose everything. The last person standing takes the prize.”

That show sounds a lot like Manhunt, a 2001 UPN series on which contestants were hunted by “predators” who shaved their contestants’ heads if they got caught. The show was revealed to have been rigged by one of its producers.
