ArchivesThis spring in the UK, the BBC produced a reality series that searched for a person to play Maria in the Sound of Music, and now the BBC is teaming with NBC to produce a similar series in the US.
You’re the One That We Want will allow viewers “to choose the two leads for a new Broadway production of ‘Grease,’” according to an NBC press release. The contest will follow the selection of people to play Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko in the new production, which will debut on Broadway in June 2007. There’s no word yet when the show will actually air.
The show will be judged, Idol-style, by three judges, according to NBC: “Jim Jacobs, the co-creator of ‘Grease’[,] along with Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall and renowned theatre producer David Ian.”
A BBC exec says in a statement that “[t]he stakes have never been higher in a talent show, with America eventually deciding on the next Sandy and Danny. I’m convinced that nothing can beat this piece for its resonance with the American audience — ‘Grease’ will once again capture the hearts and souls of the nation.”
