Senior citizens are the focus of two new network reality shows

Although reality TV was long the domain of people with tight, hard bodies that made many viewers reach for the Cheetos once they realized how imperfect they were, soon the floodgates opened to average-looking people. Later, reality TV became infatuated with celebrities, gay people, and overweight people . Now, it seems that the new hot reality commodity is old people.

Two major broadcast networks are picking up series that star senior citizens.

For The WB, the producers of Beauty and the Geek, Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg, are producing a new series that’s very similar to The Amazing Race. Fountain of Youth will follow “eight college seniors teaming up with eight active senior citizens on a race across the United States. Each of the young folks will be paired with one of their elders, and while speed will be important, the show’s means of elimination won’t be identical to that of ‘Race’,” according to Variety. The show “will in some ways be a comedic take on the CBS hit.”

Meanwhile, Real World producer Bunim-Murray is working with NBC to produce a series that also includes older cast members. 100 Things to Do Before I Die will star Leslie Nielsen and Ed Asner, and “has been described as ‘Grumpy Old Men’ meets ‘The Simple Life,’” TV Week reports. No word on a possible premiere date, although TV Week speculates that it could be sooner than later, as NBC needs a hit now.
