UPN is planning a show “that will follow five young Amish people through the Amish rite of passage called rumspringa,” TV Week reports. The teenagers, ages 16 to 20, will live with five non-Amish teens in a big city house, and have their lives taped, to find out what happens when Amish kids start getting real. During a press conference about the show, CBS’ Les Moonves said, “This is not intended to be insulting to the Amish, but to have people who have never had television who will walk down Rodeo Drive and be freaked out by what they see. This will not be denigrating in any way.” The show will be produced by a group of people including the producers of a documentary, Devil’s Playground, which followed Amish teenagers on their rumspringa. During the press conference, Moonves also suggested that the similar and controversial The Real Beverly Hillbillies is dead: “We couldn’t do the ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ so the Amish don’t have quite as good a lobbying effort.”
