Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth documentary now playing

An Inconvenient Truth, a documentary starring former vice president Al Gore, opened in New York and LA on last week, and opens a wider today. It’s now playing in cities such as Austin, Boston, Chicago, and Dallas, and will continue to add theatres as the summer progresses.

The film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, and produced and distributed by Paramount Classics and Participant Productions, follows “Gore’s persuasive argument” via his “traveling global warming show.” As dreadfully boring as that may sound, reviewers are praising the film, which has a dramatic, action movie-style trailer. Most of the reviews compiled so far at MetaCritic are largely positive.

A.O. Scott called “intellectually exhilarating” and USA TODAY says is “haunting and inspiring.” Surprisingly, FOX News’ print cousin The New York Post, calls Gore “a dangerous evangelist” and says his “shamelessness is astounding.” Variety has less abrasive doubts, saying the film “may prove an awkward fit for theatrical distribution.”

Some proceeds from the film will go toward helping solve the problem it addresses. “Paramount’s Classics has committed 5% of their domestic theatrical gross … with a minimum guarantee of $500,000 to be donated to a new bipartisan climate effort, Alliance for Climate Protection,” according to a press release.
