Idol spins off Celebrity Idol
Celebrities will compete in a new edition of American Idol, which will be known as Celebrity Idol. Ten celebs will compete for $1 million, which will be given to their favorite charity. The celebs will not be singers, but actors or others who “who can sing but aren’t known for singing,” FOX’s Mike Darnell says. “We’re going to go for the biggest talent possible.”
The same producers will produce the new series, and Darnell says they “hope that the judges and Ryan will do the show.” Still, he says the new show will be “completely disconnected from ‘American Idol.’”
Variety reports that “an early fall or November sweeps premiere seems logical,” and the show will air for just a few weeks, rather than for half of a damn year like its parent.
