Watch SNL’s takedown of Watch What Happens Live and Andy Cohen: “like a shark!”
Saturday Night Live parodied Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live last night, which is a pretty significant challenge considering Andy Cohen’s nightly talk show/hot mess is pretty much an unintentional parody by itself—and even of itself. But it worked.
Andy Cohen was, unsurprisingly, thrilled by the attention, tweeting, “OMG the one night I go to bed early I’m lampooned on SNL?! Great job I am flattered!” Tabatha Coffey was similarly amused by a brief parody of her show Tabatha Takes Over, which featured a pretty spot-on impression by Kate McKinnon.
Taran Killam’s version of Andy Cohen is pretty good, though not flawless (the laugh lost me), but the writing of the sketch had me actually laughing, from the joke about why Shahs of Sunset has viewers (“forgetting to turn off the TV after you went to the shower”) to the constant references to Andy Cohen’s self-centered egocentrism. Again, hard to parody, but SNL nailed it.
And the jokes just pile up, like Andy saying he squirms in his chair because “I’m like a shark! I have to keep moving or I’ll die” to the flawless explanation of the show: “As a reminder, the show is live, so anything can happen—but don’t worry, nothing will.”
