ArchivesAfter nine seasons, including one celebrity season, Australia’s Channel 10 has cancelled Big Brother.
The show will conclude a week from today with the final episode of the eighth regular season. Variety reports that its ratings “fell from a high of 2.4 million to less than a million this eighth season.”
The show’s producer told the Sydney Morning Herald that it “is still a very commercially viable property,” and suggested that it’d be back on another network “in the near future.”
In a statement, Channel 10’s president said, “‘Big Brother’ is the undisputed granddaddy of modern, commercial reality television in Australia. Today’s reality dramas have all, on some level, been inspired by ‘Big Brother.’ … The show has taken on topics of race, sex, homosexuality, eating disorders and alcohol abuse, many of which had been handled gingerly, if at all, on TV.”
