Big Brother 8

Dustin defends calling his dog a racist name

Big Brother 8 cast member Dustin Erikstrup is the first member of the show’s jury, and while CBS has been granting interviews, they’ve been handcuffing the media (or more correctly, the media has been willing to play along to get access): Entertainment Weekly notes that journalists “can’t ask them about anything they did not witness for themselves in the house,” and ASAP says “there’s certain stuff (“America’s Player” twist, Diary Room conversations, etc.) that CBS has forbidden The Slug from asking him in our post-eviction interview.”

Considering the negative press the show got from the bigotry coming from the house, one would imagine that the media would be all over asking Dustin about that—and about his use of certain words. But pretty much all the interviews have seemed as if asking about bigotry was off the table, too. However, After Elton did actually ask Dustin about his racist name for his dog, which Dustin defended by essentially ignoring his use of the n-word, and saying that he has many black friends.

“A female dog is a bitch. I’m not a racist and my actions speak louder than words. I’ve had just as many African-American friends and roommates as I have white. I apologize if I offended anyone. My words are not intended to hurt anyone and I think that was clear within the context of my conversation,” he said.

He also added, “How can a gay man be racist? Isn’t that that most contradictory thing on the planet or what?” Actually, no, it’s not; far too many people of persecuted colors, orientations, and religions who should know better are just as bigoted as others.
