An American Family cinematographer and co-director Alan Raymond watched The Surreal Life at the prompting of his family, including his wife and co-American Family filmmaker Susan Raymond, and was “fascinated by what he considered the low-rent way the show was made,” The New York Times reports. He says reality TV shows in general feature “[i]ncredibly shoddy production values” and remarked about “[h]ow cheap this is; how amazing that it’s become acceptable that people will watch it.
