UPN’s mildly controversial series Amish in the City kicks off its 10-week run tonight with a two-hour debut starting at 8 p.m. ET. As Newsday describes it, the show “situates five Amish young adults in a modernist Los Angeles mansion with six city-dwelling 20-somethings, among them a catty gay guy, a vegan gal who acts as though her name should be Moon Unit and another young woman whose favorite verb is ‘party.’” Reviews of the series are mixed: Variety’s review says that “[t]he joke’s on us. These kids may be sheltered, but they are by no means naive and they’re more than willing to stick up for themselves.” USA TODAY’s Robert Bianco argues that the series is “not as unusual or interesting as the title might imply. What you get in tonight’s two-hour premiere is just The Real World with Amish kids. Once they change clothes, there’s very little here you haven’t seen a thousand times before.” The Virginia Pilot’s review is not as kind, arguing that it “is tasteless and exploitative -– more so than your average reality series.”
