Amish in the City

members of Congress protest UPN’s planned Amish reality TV series.
Having finished dealing with terrorism, the deficit, jobs heading overseas, Janet Jackson, Iraq, the environment, poverty, and other concerns, Congress can finally turn its attention to what really matters: an upcoming reality TV series about Amish teenagers. Some of our representatives have their undies in a bunch over UPN’s plans to develop and air a show about Amish teenagers’ rumspringa, which was previously the subject of a documentary produced by the people creating the TV show. A total of 50 members of Congress signed a letter to CBS and Viacom execs “suggesting that if UPN airs the program, they are bigots,” according to the Washington Post’s Lisa de Moraes. Rep. Joe Pitts and other guys in suits held “a rally on a farm in Willow Street, Pennsylvania” to discuss the travesty-in-waiting. That’s according to a press release from the congressman, who says the show should be dumped “[u]nless CBS wants a permanent reputation as the network of sleaze and disrespect.” Apparently he’s never seen FOX—or a television set, because the press release refers, at one point, to “the proposed television.”
