Opera singer Cindy Chang is also an actor
America’s Got Talent’s requisite surprisingly amazing regular person opera singer performed on Wednesday’s final audition episode. Cindy Chang shocked the crowd with her incredible voice, and she had an emotional reaction to their reaction, making for a story.
But Cindy Chang is also an stage and screen actor who is a member of SAG, AFTRA, and AEA, and she has an agent, who promotes her on its web site and says she’s been singing since she was 8 years old. Her resume [PDF] shows that she’s on the cast album for a production called Asphalt Beach, and she’s been in more than 15 stage productions and two films, including Baby on Board.
The answer is no. For her audition, which you can watch below, the show called her “a homemaker” and made her seem starstruck, and before singing, she told the judges, “I always wanted to be a singer but my parents said no.” Before that, she told the camera that she “used to be a technical writer and editor, but really I’m unemployed, and mainly a wife—a housewife. Housewife is a full-time job, so…” she said, giggling.
Of course, she’s not a famous singer (yet), and she is exceptionally talented. But there’s no reason for the show to ignore her relative success in other fields just to make it seem even more amazing.
