Ellen DeGeneres’ anti-2-hour reality show PSA ignores American Idol, the biggest offender
On her talk show today, Ellen DeGeneres kicked off a fake campaign against “something that’s plaguing our great nation: reality shows that are two hours long.” Her faux PSA is a funny bit, and too much filler certainly is a problem for some shows (The Biggest Loser, I’m looking at your bloated self).
But Ellen conveniently or accidentally forgot to mention American Idol, which she judged last year. If there’s any show guilty of airing overly extended episodes with tons of filler, it’s that Fox series; just tune into any results show, which has about two minutes of actual content and 41 minutes of crap. Survivor’s two-hour finale, which Ellen does mention (and is three hours with the reunion), isn’t that overstuffed, and when the show has gone to two hours, it’s been the equivalent of two episodes in one.
