American Idol has its lowest ratings since 2002

Instead of picking up in its final weeks, American Idol 9’s ratings continue to decline, reaching lows not seen since the show’s first season seven years ago.

Though it’s still number one, Wednesday’s results show was “its lowest-rated Wednesday night audience since 2002, with 19.1 million viewers,” The New York Times reports. And Tuesday’s performance episode had 17.5 million viewers, “the worst tally since the show’s premiere season in the summer of 2002,” according to The Los Angeles Times, which notes that “Young adults, in particular, seem to be bailing rapidly: the 6.5 rating/18 share among viewers ages 18 to 49 was ‘Idol’s’ second-lowest Wednesday number during the regular season.”
