American Idol band sues Idol for $500,000

The American Federation of Musicians is suing American Idol for $500,000 on behalf of its band.

In a story that barely makes sense because its writing is so bad, TMZ reports that the producers and musicians have a “deal that prohibits ‘Idol’ from cutting the band out of downloads and ringtones of the music played on the show,” but the show has been doing that anyway since season four. The suit says the Fox competition has been “selling digitally-encoded audio files containing those soundtracks,” and wants damages plus a pension fund contribution.
