Katy Perry: “I would ditch my career” to judge American Idol

On last night’s American Idol 9, it looked to me like Katy Perry was auditioning for Simon Cowell’s job. And although I was being sort of tongue-in-cheek because her appearance was filmed well before he announced he was leaving, she’s up for the job.

“The ‘American Idol’ experience was awesome. If I was offered that job as a permanent host, I would ditch my career and take on that career,” she told MTV News. She said guest judging “was great fun. It was so easy. I didn’t really make anybody cry, but I did tell the truth to some kids that might have needed to hear it. … I guess the pressure gets really on when you start eliminating the number of people that are going through. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, and then you’ve got the final two. That can be kind of tense and stressful.”

Katy also has a really clear understanding of what she was doing: “It’s kind of like judging a talent show,” she said. Oh, a talent show! What a great metaphor.
