Paula Abdul thinks Ellen will be a “gr8 judge,” while Ellen says “I don’t like to judge people”
Paula Abdul has broken her deafening silence and given new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres her endorsement, which means the world can now relax because not knowing what Paula thought has left everything in turmoil. The former judge posted on Twitter, “I think Ellen will b a gr8 judge on Idol. She is wildly funny, talented and I wish her the best of luck!”
Meanwhile, Ellen says she’s not going to judge at all, sort of. On Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this morning, Ellen said, “I really do pride myself on not judging. We had ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ on the other day, so I do judge. But I try to remind myself that everyone is who they are for a reason. It’s gonna be a fine line — I’ll be honest, I don’t like to judge people. I like to opinionate in a necessary way.”
And Fox’s reality executive Mike Darnell totally dismissed criticism that Ellen isn’t fit to judge Idol because she lacks music industry credentials. “Blah blah blah. We think that’s silly,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “We already got three judges. We used to only have three who have enormously long musical backgrounds. She brings something different. She brings her wit and love of music. She has a vision of what she likes and doesn’t like. Really, does it matter? It’s about America voting. She’s going to add a different flavor, that’s the whole idea.”
And Darnell even told Variety that executives got the idea after Ellen appeared on So You Think You Can Dance this summer, an appearance that many viewers think was unremarkable at the very least. “All of a sudden it hit us, ‘I wonder if she’s interested. Not only was she interested, but she was incredibly enthusiastic. She’s not only a great name, but she’s terrifically talented and loves music. And in addition we get someone who already adores the show, instead of having to talk them into doing it,” Darnell said.
