Adam says to “keep speculating” on his sexual orientation as Kris discusses his chest hair
Even though American Idol 8 is over, Adam Lambert is going to keep the world guessing as to just what those pictures of him kissing men and video of him saying he’s not interested in women actually mean.
“Calm down. Keep speculating,” he told People. He then turned the conversation to what he wanted to discuss, conformity, talking about the way he was “able to show people that you can be yourself, and you should be proud of yourself, and you should own who you are and what you’re about, and never make apologies for it. … Conforming is not cool. Embracing who you are and what makes you different is actually what’s really cool … The kids that are different and out there and expressive and are bold with those choices, those are the people that grow up to be people we all want to hang out with, that become celebrities or become really successful in what they do because they believe in who they are.”
Part of Adam’s skill as a performer is working the press flawlessly and effortlessly, which is best illustrated in a TMZ paparazzo’s attempt to get Adam to admit he’s gay. Because Adam is friendly, he disarms the photographer, and the guy can’t bring himself to ask Adam directly, so instead he just says that if Adam wins, he’ll be “the first.” Adam says, “the first what? Friend of you?” And then Adam gets in a car and leaves. Brilliant.
Reporters also couldn’t get themselves to ask Adam directly during last week’s conference call with reporters, Adam was asked if talk about his sexual orientation may have affected the vote. He simply said: “Probably.”
They were able to ask Kris Allen a direct question, the one hard-hitting question everyone has had since they Googled those pictures of Kris on the beach. Flash News reporter Monica Sotomayor told Kris she read that “there was something you could change about yourself you wish you had chest hair” and asked him, “Have you just never really had it or are you going to be getting like transplants now that you’re going to be making good money?”
The reporter’s thorough research led her to Kris’ official bio on AmericanIdol.com, where he answers that as one of 33 questions that he was probably tired of answering.
As to the follow-up, Kris told the reporter, “You never know; I’m just kidding. I do have a little bit, the weirdest question, by the way. It’s really patchy and nasty looking so I want man chest hair.”
If he’d been as skilled as Adam at handling the press, he would have stopped at “the weirdest question” part, making headlines about his music instead of making headlines over his patchy chest hair.
