Paula Abdul denies admitting painkiller addiction, says she just went to a spa
Oh, for fuck’s sake: Paula Abdul is denying she admitted being addicted to painkillers, as Ladies Home Journal reported as part of an interview with her.
“It was very stressful for me to hear that and to be quoted saying something I never said. I’ve never checked into a rehab clinic. I’ve never been addicted or abused drugs, and I’ve never been addicted or abused alcohol. I’ve never even been drunk in my life,” Paula told the WKQI Mojo in the Morning radio show yesterday, according to E! News.
The Ladies Home Journal article says Paula checked herself into a resort and spa and essentially rehabbed herself. On the radio, Paula admitted going to the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, but said, “It’s a spa. I was there for almost three days having fun doing spa stuff. It’s not a clinic. It’s not a detox place. It’s a luxurious spa. It’s like taking a mini vacation. I just wanted to chill out and get messages and maybe a manicure and pedicure.”
The only problematic part about LHJ’s original story is that there’s one direct quotation from Paula about the rehab/addiction, and that’s when she’s discussing going through withdrawal alone at the spa. “I could have killed myself…. Withdrawal — it’s the worst thing. I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been,” she told the magazine.
The magazine said in a statement, “We stand by our reporting and are happy that Paula decided to share her journey with us.”
